Jason Brickman says he plays to join the next PBA draft as he returned to the country to reinforce Strong Group Athletics in its campaign for the Dubai International Basketball Championship
MANILA, Philippines – Jason Brickman is giving the PBA another shot following an aborted attempt years ago.
Brickman said he plans to join the next draft as he returned to the country to reinforce Strong Group Athletics in its campaign for the Dubai International Basketball Championship set from January 24 to February 2.
“I would like to enter the PBA. I’m looking forward to the next draft. Hopefully I can enter and join the PBA,” Brickman said on Sunday, January 19.
Brickman, a standout guard out of LIU Brooklyn, tried to take his act to the PBA in 2021 following a well-travelled career that saw him play in Russia, Germany, Malaysia, and Thailand.
He was seen as one of the top prospects from that draft class, being one of only four players in US NCAA Division 1 history to record 1,000 assists.
But Brickman, along with former Alab Pilipinas teammates Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and Jeremiah Gray, were ruled ineligible for failing to submit the necessary documents for Filipino-foreigners.
The savvy playmaker instead brought his talents to Taiwan, signing with the Kaohsiung Aquas for the inaugural season of the T1 League in 2021.
Brickman helped steer the Aquas to championship in that first season and suited up for Kaohsiung until 2024, even earning a pair of First Team honors and leading the T1 League in assists twice.
The PBA easing up on its eligibility rules, though, prompted Brickman to part ways with the Aquas, who agreed to terminate his contract in December.
Ganuelas-Rosser and Gray eventually made their way to the PBA as the league requires only a Philippine passport from Filipino-foreigners.
“When they changed the rules to allow just the passport, I would be able to join. Unfortunately, I was just in a contract in Taiwan,” said Brickman. “Now that I’m out of the contract, I should be able to join the next PBA [season].”
Reuniting with coach Charles Tiu and Mikey Williams, Brickman hopes to win another championship just like they did as part of the Mighty Sports side that ruled the 2019 Jones Cup.
Brickman will also team up with former NBA veterans Andray Blatche and DeMarcus Cousins and locals Rhenz Abando and Dave Ildefonso. – Rappler.com
