MANILA, Philippines — Amid public outrage on social media, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno defended yesterday the hefty increase in garbage collection fees imposed by the city government.

Moreno recently approved Ordinance 9151, which increased trash collection fees by up to 12 times.

Moreno defended the measure, saying “hard decisions should be made.”

“In the long term, the people of Manila will benefit from it,” he said.

City hall said the garbage collection fees had remained unchanged for more than a decade.
