A restorative cleaning initiative of historic Fort Santiago in Manila aims to preserve Philippine heritage for future generations.

This is the result of a partnership between the Intramuros Administration (IA) and German cleaning brand Kärcher where portions of the reconstructed main gate and the wall façades of Baluartillo de San Miguel and Medio Baluarte de San Francisco will undergo a professional, deep cleaning process.

According to IA Administrator Attorney Joan Padilla, the project will unveil the “full magnificence” and grandeur of the historical sites within the 454-year old fortress that stands guard where the Pasig River meets Manila Bay.

“The fortifications of Intramuros have witnessed the rise and fall of eras, enduring the ravages of nature, chaos of war, and the scars of history's ever-shifting tides. Despite the repeated devastation, these fortifications were rebuilt time and time again, standing as a testament to its resilience and the enduring spirit of our nation’s heritage,” she said.

“While the years have left indelible marks, these walls have kept their beauty and significance hidden beneath layers of time... Although weathered by time and the trials of history, Fort Santiago remains to be a living testament to the country’s rich cultural heritage and historical legacy, and now, we are privileged to see it once again in its full glory,” Padilla added

Meanwhile, Kärcher said the project includes the use of hot water high-pressure cleaners that effectively remove biological growth gently to preserve the centuries-old stone walls.

“The removal of organic growth and black crusts helps protect these monuments for future generations while allowing restorers to assess and address structural damage more effectively. Each project undergoes meticulous planning over approximately two years and is executed in close collaboration with monument owners, conservators, restorers, and art historians to ensure the safest and most effective preservation techniques are used,” said Kärcher Philippines General Manager Darwin Banez.

The initiative is part of their 90th anniversary challenge to conduct 90 cleaning projects in public places, streets, communities, and historic structures worldwide for 2025.

Fort Santiago was the ninth historical landmark in the country to be part of Kärcher's restoration efforts, preceded by the Rizal Monument, the People Power Monument, the San Agustin Church, Plaza Miranda, the Bonifacion Shrine, the San Sebastian Minor Basilica, the Silang Church in Cavite, and the St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

“As part of our global cultural sponsorship program, our goal is not only to clean but also to help preserve historic and culturally significant landmarks around the world. This initiative aligns with the growing awareness among Filipinos about the importance of heritage conservation,” Banez said.

The media event on February 20 also included Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Economics Counsellor Dr. David Klebs, Kärcher Southeast Asia Director of Marketing & Product management Ms. Daina Bartuseviciute, and Kärcher Cleaning Expert Mr. Gerd Heidrich. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News
