BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — State seismologists have reported an increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island as it recorded 45 volcano-tectonic earthquakes yesterday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the increased activity indicates that magma is rising toward the surface.
Mari-Andylene Quintia, Phivolcs resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in La Carlota City, said the epicenter of the quakes was recorded on the northwestern side of Kanlaon.
The temblors were felt in varying intensities in the cities of Bacolod, Bago and La Carlota in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon in Negros Oriental.
