MANILA, Philippines – March 28 is the start of the campaign period for local elections in the country. Politicians’ activities and materials courting voters’ support in the provinces, congressional districts, cities, and municipalities finally become official.
As if that is not enough of a spectacle, today is also the 80th birthday of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is detained in The Hague, the Netherlands, as he faces allegations of crimes against humanity. His supporters in various parts of the Philippines and overseas hold prayer rallies to call for the release of the former president.
But the protests are not all pro-Duterte. Human rights groups strive to put the spotlight on the victims and families of the drug war amid the noise of the Duterte loyalists.
