MANILA, Philippines — Most parts of the country may see generally fair weather today, as Tropical Depression Ada continues to move away, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The center of Ada, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, was found at 465 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora at 4 p.m. yesterday.

It continued to move “east southeastward slowly,” until it gradually speeds up and makes a recurve and eventually weakens into a low-pressure area by tomorrow.

PAGASA noted the new surge of the northeast monsoon that brings “dry air entrainment” may cause the further weakening of Ada.

The trough or extension of Ada will bring “cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms” over Camarines Sur and Catanduanes.

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will cover parts of Luzon. The regions of Cordillera and Cagayan Valley may see “cloudy skies with light rains” and “partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains” over the Ilocos Region and the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Zambales.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience generally fair weather with chances of rainshowers and thunderstorms.

While PAGASA did not issue a gale warning, it warned of “moderate to strong” winds in coastal waters over Northern and Central Luzon and the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas.

PCG: 1 death, 31 rescued

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) yesterday reported that one person died and 31 others were rescued when three motorized boats capsized in separate maritime incidents because of Ada.

Capt. Noemie Cayabyab, PCG spokesperson, said on Sunday a motorized boat with 12 people on board capsized in Barangay Nonoc, Surigao City because of strong waves.

This reportedly led to the death of one person while 11 others were rescued.

Based on PCG data last Jan. 17, there were two other maritime incidents that took place because of the storm.

In Barangay Nonoc, a motorized boat, with nine people onboard, capsized because of rough seas and strong waves.

Between the waters of Limasawa Island and Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte, a motorized boat carrying two crewmen and nine passengers also capsized.

Cayabyab said passing motorized boats were the first to respond to the three maritime incidents.
