ILOILO CITY — The Iloilo River North Bank Road or Sunset Boulevard will be opened to vehicular traffic on Jan. 24 ahead of the Dinagyang Festival.
City Mayor Jerry Treñas confirmed on Wednesday the opening of the road project following a meeting with Department of Public Works and Highways Western Visayas (DPWH) director Sanny Boy Oropel and assistant regional director Al Fruto.
The opening was initially scheduled for Jan. 22 but was rescheduled to ensure a smooth and well-prepared inauguration.
"The program will feature biking and tree planting activities along the boulevard, followed by a short ceremony attended by former Senator Franklin Drilon, who spearheaded this transformative project," the mayor said.
The Sunset Boulevard is among the projects facilitated by Drilon, alongside the controversial Ungka Flyover, before concluding his 12-year tenure as a senator in 2022.
The project, which costs P2.07 billion, is a 4.99-kilometer four-lane road project that begins at Molo-Mandurriao Road, intersects with the Iloilo Circumferential Road, and concludes at Oton-Pakiad-Mandurriao Road.

Construction began in April 2022, with partial access for jogging and recreational activities granted on June 23, 2024, during the DPWH's 126th anniversary celebration.
The boulevard will feature amenities including an esplanade, dedicated bike lanes, paved walkways, and softscapes to ensure a sustainable and greener Iloilo City.
This strategic route is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion along the Iloilo-Antique road.
