Illegal cigarettes, liquor crushed in Tuguegarao

TUGUEGARAO CITY — Officials and workers of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Office 03 based in Cagayan Valley have destroyed thousands of confiscated products at a sanitary landfill here on Monday, Feb. 24.

The confiscated products were destroyed as part of a nationwide crackdown on illegal cigarettes and liquor.

The destroyed items included unregistered cigarettes and imported liquor seized from various establishments in cities and towns, including Tuguegarao, Sta. Ana, Cauayan, Alicia, and other areas, BIR Regional Director Lorna Binarao said on Monday.

"This is our contribution to the nationwide crackdown as we commit to enforce the law and curb illegal activities within the BIR jurisdiction," said Binarao.

"Aside from the confiscation of the contraband, the filing of criminal charges against those involved in these unlawful acts will also be done," she added.

The revenue offices have been aiming to boost revenue collection, safeguard legitimate businesses and consumers, and promote public health and safety by ensuring that only legal products are on sale.

Using a shredder machine, the products were crushed and permanently disposed of to ensure they could not be sold again.

According to the BIR regional chief, the operation was part of a simultaneous effort across different regions to combat smuggling and unauthorized sales of cigarettes and liquor.

The BIR official also urged the public to avoid purchasing unregistered products and report establishments violating the law.
