MANILA, Philippines — The Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) remains in limbo, as it has yet to receive any notice from Malacañang regarding its fate, special adviser Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said yesterday.

In an interview on One News’ “Storycon,” Azurin said the ICI is currently operating with only one commissioner following the resignation of Rogelio Singson and Rossana Fajardo, which prevents it from holding hearings.

“We have not received any notice so far. That is why we need to formally write to the Office
of the President to get clear guidance on the fate of the ICI… It’s important for us to know this because, in fairness to our employees and those we hired, they also need to be informed so they can be prepared,” he said.

According to Azurin, reports suggesting the ICI may be abolished by Feb. 1 remain unconfirmed, noting that new appointments are needed for the body to function fully.

Pending the appointment of new commissioners, Azurin said the ICI’s legal team continues to review documents related to alleged corruption in flood control projects, including the so-called Cabral files from Batangas Rep. Leandro Leviste.

Priority cases investigated before mid-December have already been referred to the ombudsman for determination of probable cause.

“Eventually, once the two lacking commissioners are replaced, it will be easier for them to discuss the next steps,” Azurin said.

Despite the uncertainty, he vowed that the ICI will continue to perform its mandate, including coordination with law enforcement agencies on asset recovery and related investigations. — Janvic Mateo
