MANILA, Philippines — The International Criminal Court's Office of the Prosecutor has asked the court to reject former President Rodrigo Duterte's request for interim release, saying his rejection of the court's legitimacy and his family's claims he was "kidnapped" make him a flight risk.

The prosecution's 15-page filing, submitted June 23, opposed Duterte's defense team's request for interim release ahead of his confirmation of charges hearing scheduled for September 23.

The ICC deputy prosecutor, Mame Mandiaye Niang, argued Duterte poses multiple risks that justify his continued detention: the possibility of fleeing before trial, intimidating witnesses, and potentially continuing alleged crimes if returned to the Philippines.
