House Speaker Bojie Dy delivers a speech during a flag ceremony on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025.

MANILA, Philippines — House Speaker Bojie Dy sees no logical basis to support the impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., saying it lacks merit.
In a statement on Monday, January 19, Dy said Marcos is "clearly fulfilling" his duties as the country’s elected president, countering allegations in the impeachment complaint that questioned his fitness to serve amid claims of corruption and drug addiction.
"Wala tayong nakikitang batayan na magbibigay-katwiran sa isinampang impeachment complaint laban kay Pangulong Ferdinand 'Bongbong' R. Marcos Jr.," the speaker said.
(We see no basis that would justify the impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand "Bongbong" R. Marcos Jr.)
Dy added that impeachment is a serious matter and a remedy of last resort, requiring a rigorous, careful and meticulous process to scrutinize the evidence against an impeachable official.
However, he recognized that the House is constitutionally bound to consider the impeachment complaint responsibly, ensuring it is not exploited for political purposes that could only sow more division.
Other House lawmakers also voiced concern and initial disagreement with the impeachment complaint, including Rep. Edgar Erice (Caloocan, 2nd District) and Rep. Miro Quimbo (Marikina, 2nd District).
"Impeachment is a remedy, not a weapon. It remains as a constitutional mechanism to address grave violations, but we cannot allow our constitutional processes to be hijacked by those seeking to manufacture crisis where none exists," Quimbo said in a statement.
He added that with just two years remaining in Marcos' term, public officials should focus more on keeping the government running smoothly instead of creating disruption that could harm the economy.
Meanwhile, Erice found the complainant questionable given that Andre de Jesus had earlier defended First Lady Liza Marcos in November 2024, when he moved to disbar Glenn Chong for threatening to slap her.
Reps. Jonathan Keith Flores and Joel Chua, former impeachment prosecutors in Vice President Sara Duterte's case, also weighed in on the complaint. They said it will definitely face an uphill battle in the House, considering the strong support Marcos continues to enjoy in the chamber.
Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno, who chairs the National Unity Party, also said last week that the party would oppose any impeachment attempt against Marcos simply because its members do not see any factual basis to entertain it.
Without claiming that Congress will not prioritize the complaint, Dy said lawmakers will be focused on passing legislation addressing the country’s social and economic challenges once it resumes its session on January 26.
The impeachment complaint accuses Marcos of violating the Constitution, committing graft and corruption, and betraying public trust over incidents including former president Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest, drug addiction claims, unprogrammed appropriations, and alleged flood control project kickbacks.
