COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Gunmen snatched from employees of a community bank P1.6 million worth of cash in an attack at a thoroughfare in Barangay Damilag in Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon province on Wednesday, June 17.
Local executives and officials of the Bukidnon Provincial Police Office told reporters on Thursday that the employees of the South Bank Libona were together in a car, proceeding to a Land Bank branch in the center of Manolo Fortich to deposit P1.6 million worth of cash when they were waylaid by gunmen riding a Ford Ranger pick-up truck at Sitio Miranda in Barangay Damilag.
The main clients of the small South Bank Libona are members of livelihood cooperatives and organizations of farmers in Manolo Fortich and nearby towns in Bukidnon in Region 10, according to local executives.
Municipal officials and police investigators who responded to the incident had told reporters that the gunmen opened fire first at the car of the bank employees, which veered towards a concrete flood control ditch along a stretch of the Camp Fabia Road when its driver lost control of the wheel, stunned by the gunshots that hit the vehicle.
Barangay officials said the armed men alighted from their pick-up truck and immediately took the bag containing P1.6 million cash from the beleaguered bank employees at gunpoint.
The culprits immediately escaped, according to barangay officials in Damilag.
Intelligence units of the Police Regional Office 10 and the Army’s 4th Infantry Division are cooperating in identifying the group behind the daring highway heist for prosecution.
