(UPDATE) TACLOBAN CITY — Albuera mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa denied claims that the shooting incident during a campaign sortie here was "staged."

"Who would deliberately aim to get shot near their heart? This was no staged event," Espinosa said in a Facebook live streaming on Friday.

"I still have a purpose in our town, so Lord has given me more time, sparing my life for now,"

Espinosa was shot and wounded by an unidentified assailant hiding in the ceiling of a gymnasium at Tinag-an village, Albuera, Leyte, during his campaign on April 10. He was with his sister, vice mayoral candidate Mariel Espinosa-Marinay, who was also injured in the attack. A minor was also hit by a stray bullet, a report said."I'll dedicate my life to truly serving others," Espinosa said.

"Please pray that I'll become the mayor of our city," he added.

Espinosa, meanwhile, is seeking enhanced security measures from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Speaker Martin Romualdez for himself, his family, and his slate, saying in Filipino that the "fight continues."

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Regional Office 8 (Eastern Visayas) has identified a person of interest in connection with the case.

"We have a person of interest, but we cannot give details yet," PRO-8 Public Information Office chief Maj. Analiza Armeza said.
