AS Guest of Honor at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025, the Philippines announced its major initiatives at a Berlin press talk, including new German editions of Philippine books, author lineups, and cultural events across Frankfurt. The country also revealed its first-ever national stand at Leipziger Buchmesse and the launch of its cultural program, Oculus.
Representing the delegation were Karina Bolasco, curator and literary head; authors Daryll Delgado, presenting her novel "Remains;" and J. Philip Ignacio, with graphic novel "Alandal." Frankfurter Buchmesse Director Juergen Boos moderated the discussion.
Sen. Loren Legarda emphasized literature's role in bridging cultures, calling the initiative "a journey through stories that sail across oceans." Boos added that literature remains a vital tool for global connection.
The Guest of Honor project is a collaboration between the NBDB, NCCA, DFA, and Senator Legarda's office. Its theme is "The Imagination peoples the air, reflects Philippine literature's depth and diversity."
With over 120 titles translated under the NBDB's subsidy program — 27 into German — the initiative strengthens the global reach of Filipino authors. The lineup includes five National Artists and acclaimed writers such as Jose Dalisay, Maria Ressa, and Patricia Evangelista.
