Former Korea Asian Quota import aspirant Alyssa Solomon evades potential eligibilty issues after her timely withdrawal from the draft, thus clearing the rest of her likely final UAAP season with the NU Lady Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines – Towering NU Lady Bulldogs star Alyssa Solomon’s likely final season remains unimpeded after the UAAP confirmed her eligibility for the remainder of the Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament.

This developed after eligibility questions were raised when the opposite hitter submitted her name for consideration in the upcoming Korean Volleyball Federation (KOVO) draft in April, which she reneged last Thursday, March 13.

Had she stayed and got drafted, it would have been a violation of the UAAP rules enforced a decade ago — when players were prohibited to be drafted by professional teams while they were playing for their respective universities.

“The University Athletic Association of the Philippines Board of Managing Directors (BMD), after due deliberation, confirmed that National University student-athlete Alyssa Solomon remains eligible to compete in the UAAP,” the league said in a statement on Tuesday, March 18.

“While the BMD noted that Solomon did apply and was included in the draft list of the 2025 Korean Volleyball Federation Asian Quota Draft, her subsequent action in immediately withdrawing her application allowed her to continue competing in the ongoing UAAP Season,” the statement added.

“The UAAP remains committed to ensuring the integrity of its competitions and the welfare of its student-athletes.”

Solomon, last year’s Finals Most Valuable Player, helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to a league-best 7-0 record at the conclusion of the first round of eliminations.

She also placed sixth among the league’s top scorers (116), fourth-most accurate spiker (35.96%) and is the second best blocker (0.64/set).

NU is gunning for a second consecutive championship, a feat that it had not yet accomplished since a breakthrough in Season 84 in 2022.

The NU star was recently named as the Collegiate Press Corps’ Player of the Week after averaging 23.0 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ twin wins over Adamson and UST, respectively.

Solomon, who said previously that this was her likely final UAAP season, is said to be looking at several options such as the Premier Volleyball League and one other Asian leagues, sources said. – Rappler.com
