CEBU CITY — A relationship breakup turned violent inside a school restroom in Barangay Mabolo four days before Valentine's Day when an 18-year-old grade 10 student stabbed his 14-year-old girlfriend on Monday.

Police said the suspect lured the grade 8 student into the restroom at around 6:15 p.m. to confront her about their breakup.

When the girl refused to reconsider the relationship, the boy became enraged, pulled out a knife, and stabbed her in the neck and foot.

Despite her injuries, the victim managed to escape and seek help from a teacher, who immediately rushed her to Cebu City Medical Center.

The teacher later reported the incident to the Mabolo Police Station.

Police said the suspect had fled and went into hiding but on Tuesday morning, a follow-up operation was launched by the police who were able to apprehend him with the help of his parents.

Mabolo Police Station chief Maj. Romeo Caacoy Jr. said the suspect was deeply in love with the victim and could not accept the breakup.

He said that the two teenagers had been in a relationship for four months, and the suspect became angry after the victim decided to leave him.

The victim admitted to the police that she had ended their relationship via online chat but did not disclose her reason for doing so.

Although the suspect expressed remorse while in police custody, the victim's family has decided to press charges of frustrated homicide against him.

Meanwhile, authorities are on high alert for potential crimes as Valentine's Day approaches, particularly love scams, human trafficking and the so-called crimes of passion between intimate partners.

LtCol. Maria Theresa Macatangay, deputy city director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office, said law enforcement is closely monitoring online platforms where criminals exploit victims through romance scams.

Authorities are also coordinating with motel management to prevent cases of human trafficking, especially involving minors.
