Nearly three months after the first beta release, Google is now rolling out the second public beta for Android 16. The new release includes improvements to camera features, media capabilities, performance tweaks, and accessibility options.
Among the notable features in Beta 2 are significant camera upgrades. These include hybrid auto exposure, precise color temperature and tint adjustments, as well as support for motion photo capture and Ultra HDR images in the HEIC format.
Google also revealed plans to add AVIF support for Ultra HDR in future updates.
For those into custom graphics, Android 16 Beta 2 introduces the Android Graphics Shading Language (AGSL), allowing for complex effects like Threshold, Sepia, and Hue Saturation. Users can apply these effects to individual draw calls for more creative flexibility.
On the security front, the update adds new granular health and fitness permissions and a security hardening feature to protect against “Intent redirection attacks”.
Accessibility-wise, Android 16 Beta 2 enhances TalkBack, offering better support for elements with multiple labels and expandable UI elements. Streaming apps will also benefit from a dynamic video quality adjustment based on device capabilities.
The second beta Android 16 is now available for eligible Google Pixel devices including Pixel 6 and newer devices, and the Android Emulator. Those enrolled in the Android Beta Program can expect the update to arrive via OTA.
With Beta 2 out, Google plans to release two more updates before the platform reaches stability in March. The final Android 16 release is expected to drop in Q2 2025.
