Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., a 13-time Philippine Open champion, is gearing up for an expected tough grind in the 2025 Asean Seniors Chess Championships to be held on July 1-11 in Penang, Malaysia.

The 63-year-old Antonio said he will leave no stones unturned as he vowed to make a gallant stand in representing the country in the annual tournament.

"I would like to thank Penang Chess Association president Atty. See Swee Sie, who is also the vice president of Malaysian Chess Federation for inviting me to participate in the Asean Seniors Chess Championships," said Antonio.

"I would also like to thank Mr. Ignatius Leong for organizing the Asean Seniors Chess Championships and Asean Age Chess Championships," he added.

Also invited to play at the Asean Seniors are Filipino International Masters Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Angelo Young and Rico Mascarinas.

The tournament will feature three chess events: Standard, Rapid and Blitz.

It will also hold Makruk Chess or Thai chess and Asean chess, both events to be played in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games.

There will also be an age group competition.

Antonio, meanwhile, is also set to compete in the Woman Fide Master Sheerie Joy Lomibao Open Rapid Chess Championships on May 18 at the ground floor of Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong City as well as the Asian Dragons Invitational Chess Tournament on July 12-16 in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Later this year, Antonio will represent the Philippines in the Fide World Seniors Chess Championships from Oct. 20 to Nov. 2, 2025, in Gallipoli, Puglia, Italy.

Last Wednesday, Antonio graced the 7th art exhibition hosted by Jeff Bugayong at Contemporary Art Gallery in Okada, Manila.

Bugayong, a chess enthusiast, invited his chess idol to his art exhibit.

Antonio scored a runner-up finish at the Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championships on April 7-9 at the Melbourne Chess Club in Melbourne, Australia.

He then placed fourth in the Premier Division of the 2025 O2C Doeberl Cup Chess Championships on April 17-21 in Canberra, Australia.
