More affordable internet
MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom has cut the rates of its data packages by 60 percent since 2019 in line with efforts to make internet access more affordable to Filipinos.
Globe yesterday said the prices of its data bundles have gone down by 60 percent since 2019 to reflect the lowering cost of internet access.
Likewise, Globe said data rates decreased by 17 percent from 2024 to 2025, as the telco-to-tech giant reaps the benefits of sustained investment in mobile infrastructure to bring down end-user pricing.
Globe also said customers in the P999 monthly tier have seen their cost per Mbps halved, as their speeds were increased from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
Postpaid plans in the P1,499 to P1,699 range also quadrupled their speeds, slashing price per Mbps by 70 percent.
Globe president and CEO Carl Raymond Cruz said the company is working on price reduction to give consumers more for what they spend. This is also in line with efforts by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to bring down pricing.
“Our role is to remove barriers whether they are cost, location or complexity (because) that is the only way that we move forward together,” Cruz said.
Based on third-party analysis reported in the GSMA’s 2024 Affordability Index, the Philippines is gaining on its regional peers in lowering internet costs and scaling up reliability and speed.
The Philippines stands alongside the likes of Cambodia and Vietnam in affordability, but the country is leading the region with the second fastest mobile internet.
The DICT has set a target of slashing connectivity prices by half by 2028. The agency is confident that this can be achieved with the passage of the Konektadong Pinoy Act that eases the entry process for new telcos.
On the private sector front, telcos are keeping their foot on the pedal in network expansion. For instance, Globe has finished 1,375 new cellular builds and 8,699 mobile site upgrades so far this year to stay ahead of the mobile competition.
The telco is also partnering with community distributors like sari-sari stores to provide low-cost options for consumers.
