MANILA, Philippines — Telco-to-tech giant Globe Telecom Inc. is leaning on artificial intelligence (AI) to improve some of its decision-making processes, leading to energy savings of as much as P125 million yearly.

Globe aims to expand the role of AI in network operations, building on the success of its initial foray that led to cost savings from energy efficiency.

Currently, Globe deploys AI tools for energy use, allowing it to change power volume in cellular sites in real time depending on real time network demand.

Globe paired its AI effort with energy management programs to see the cost impact. With its AI tools covering almost 20,000 assets across the archipelago, the telco was able to save more than 11.3 million kWh of electricity in 2024, translating to up to P125 million in savings.

Further, Globe is capitalizing on AI to enhance cooling systems in its facilities and offices. The telco maximizes an AI device called External Digital Demand Response Technology to regulate cooling in piping systems.

The device enables Globe to minimize electricity consumption, and initial estimates by the telco showed energy savings of as high as 30 percent.

Globe senior vice president and head of service planning and engineering Joel Agustin said more investments on AI are on the way, particularly in reducing energy consumption.

Agustin said Globe wants to show that AI adoption and energy efficiency could go hand in hand, two things that are usually polarized given the power requirement of running AI tools.

“We see innovation as a force for good. These AI-driven solutions show that resource efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand,” Agustin said.

“Technology allows us to respond in real time. It is a smarter way to manage energy because the system knows when to ramp up or slow down depending on the demand,” he added.

Agustin said Globe would keep on incorporating AI into its network operations to reduce power consumption, vowing that the shift would never compromise connectivity quality for consumers.

Overall, the use of AI tools for energy efficiency is part of Globe’s commitment to reach net zero by cutting carbon waste by 42 percent by 2030 and by 90 percent by 2050 from 2021 baselines.
