MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom Inc. is going all-in on its bet to grow larger in the broadband market, putting up barangay-based centers in the Visayas to process applications for faster onboarding.

Globe is doubling down on its push to become the country’s second biggest broadband provider and is pairing its fiber rollout with market promotion.

Globe is establishing barangay-based centers in several provinces in Visayas to serve as physical outlets for product queries and application processing.

The telco has set up community-based centers in Aklan, Antique, Bohol, Capiz, Cebu, Guimaras, Iloilo, Leyte, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental and Samar. It is adding similar sites in Aklan, Antique, Bohol, Capiz, Cebu, Leyte and Samar this June.

Globe leans on the initiative to address some of the challenges faced by subscribers when trying to find connectivity solutions for their households. Some of them, living in communities far from the center, lament the distance of physical sites that could process their broadband applications.

Globe said the broadband centers are designed as access points for consumers inquiring about fiber plans or checking the service availability in their area.

The facilities can also receive application assistance, with Globe customer representatives tasked to handle even walk-in customers from nearby households.

Globe general manager in Visayas Jimbo Cordero said the project aims to bridge the information gap on home internet in areas that are far from central business districts where the telco operates most of its service centers.

“Reliable connectivity has become essential for education, work, business and everyday life. By bringing broadband services closer to communities, we are making it easier for more families to access the opportunities that come with a strong internet connection,” Cordero said.

Based on records from DataReportal, the Philippines is home to more than 97.5 million internet users as of January, representing 84 percent of the population. Globe believes this could still rise if areas outside cities are prioritized by broadband providers.

Last year, Globe president and CEO Carl Raymond Cruz announced the telco’s goal of becoming the country’s second largest broadband player by overtaking Converge ICT Solutions Inc.

As of January, Globe serves 2.24 million subscribers in the broadband segment, still a long way to catch Converge’s 3.09 million.
