Two generations of Filipino Christian music artists — Gary Valenciano and RJ dela Fuente — have joined forces in a heartfelt rendition of “Blessings,” a modern Christian classic originally penned by Laura Story.

Released under Sony Music Entertainment and Waterwalk Records, the single is an introspective and moving collaboration anchored in shared faith and personal trials.

The accompanying music video, directed by Jason Maximo, premiered on June 25 and presents a minimalist, emotionally driven visual that mirrors the song’s spiritual message — that blessings often arrive disguised as hardship.

In an intimate interview with the press, Valenciano shared that his connection with “Blessings” began in a deeply personal moment of solitude during a drive from his personal quiet time in Tagaytay.

“Then all the way home, randomly, I scrolled on what’s the latest inspirational music, and that was the song I heard. I had to pull over because my tears just started to flow and not many songs do that with me but that did. And then I started making people hear it and the same reaction, then they’ll ask who is it,” Valenciano recalled.

Valenciano also spoke about how the lyrics resonated with him on a deeper level and reshaped how he thinks about the concept of blessings.

“When you talk about blessings, it usually always brings a smile to people’s faces. ‘How’s your son?’ ‘Oh he’s such a blessing,’ ‘How’s your studies?’ ‘Oh I’m so blessed.’ But there’s also blessings that don’t come that way, where it could be through a loss or through a breaking moment or even through rejection that you only get to see the blessing behind it later on. Like blessings in disguise.

“What seems to be really bad may actually be a blessing in disguise. That really resonated with me. The lyrics says, ‘What if blessings come through raindrop, what if healing comes through tears, what if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near.’ Those statements carry a lot of what people are crying from within. So I must say, with the name of the song being ‘Blessings,’ I’m really blessed that I’ve been given a chance to do this,” Valenciano elaborated.

Meanwhile, for dela Fuente, working with his “Tito Gary” isn’t just a career milestone but the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

“It’s a dream come true. Tito Gary has always been an inspiration to me ever since I was young. I grew up in California so I’ve been watching his shows there. To my head I’m saying I want to do that when I grow up — to sing, perform, talk about his faith, share his story and his journey. Now we get to do a song together,” dela Fuente shared.

Dela Fuente also noted that the song had long held meaning for him as well “I heard it back in the States a long time ago. And Tito Gary has a story about this song. I’ve always wanted to do a version of it and he wanted to do the same. and The timing was perfect. So it’s a blessing that we get to do Blessings together.”

The same as Valenciano, dela Fuente shared the part of the song that resonates with him most.

“My favorite part of the song is the chorus. It’s just a reminder of a life we can’t explain, we don’t understand but in the midst of all that craziness, all the chaos that’s happening in the world now, God’s still with us and never leave us,” he said.

The song took on even more emotional weight for dela Fuente when he recorded it, just months after the loss of his stepmother.

“My stepmom passed away because of cancer. It was a song that hit pretty close to home. I really had to hold on to the message of the song because that time was a very emotional time,” he tearfully recalled.

“We’re still grieving so when I recorded it, I really had to hold on to God’s promises and knowing that in the midst of all the heartache and the grief, He is still there,” he continued.

Meanwhile, director Jason Maximo said the music video mirrors the emotional arc of the song — moving from sorrow to hope.

“We started in black limbo, a void where light slowly begins to rise with the music, mirroring how hope often begins quietly. RJ stands in cool, desaturated tones: calm yet distant. Gary Valenciano is wrapped in warm, golden hues: vibrant and intense. Two different seasons, but in both, God is moving,” he said in a statement.

As the video progresses, light overtakes the darkness.

“And then, the shift — light floods the frame, the black disappears. They stand in white, fully surrounded. It’s not just brightness; it’s the presence of Jesus, overwhelming everything. Darkness doesn’t just fade; it surrenders,” Maximo added.

Valenciano and dela Fuente will next appear in the musical “Joseph the Dreamer” which will run from July 11 to 20 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in Makati. Valenciano plays Jacob, Joseph’s father, while dela Fuente plays Reuben.

“Blessings” by Valenciano and dela Fuente is now streaming on all digital platforms.
