MANILA, Philippines — Rep. Janette Garin (Iloilo 1st District) has filed complaints of cyberlibel and perjury against lawyer Levi Baligod and 18 former soldiers who were allegedly bagmen of fugitive former lawmaker Zaldy Co.
Garin filed the complaints against Baligod and the former soldiers at the Department of Justice on Wednesday, June 10.
"Hindi ko kilala yung 18 bodyguards drivers na allegedly ay nasa kay former congressman Zaldy Co," Garin said in an ambush interview with reporters.
(I do not know the 18 bodyguards and drivers who are allegedly with former congressman Zaldy Co.)
"Wala akong kilala sa kanilang lahat. Ang kilala ko lang ay si former congressman Mike Defensor and of course kilala ko rin si Attorney Baligod," she added.
(I do not know any of them. The only ones I know are former congressman Mike Defensor and, of course, I also know Attorney Baligod.)
The 18 former soldiers alleged that Garin is one of the lawmakers who received suitcases full of money that allegedly came from Co.
Garin has denied the allegations. "Malinis ang konsensya ko at ni isang bag, envelope o maleta ay walang naibigay si Zaldy Co sa akin o maski sino mang miyembro ng aking pamilya at ng aking opisina," Garin said.
(My conscience is clear, and not a single bag, envelope, or suitcase was ever given by Zaldy Co to me or to any member of my family and my office.)
She has been the ninth individual to file a complaint against Baligod and the former soldiers over their allegations of delivering money.
Several personalities have filed complaints before the Department of Justice over the former soldiers' statements, including former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Mamamayang Liberal Rep. Leila de Lima, Fr. Flavie Villanueva, Bureau of Corrections Director Gregorio Catapang Jr. and former National Security Adviser Eduardo Año.
On June 8, Sen. Erwin Tulfo also filed slander complaints against three of the 18 alleged bagmen at the Pasay City Prosecutor's Office. The day after, Rep. Benny Abante (Manila's 6th District) also filed a complaint at the Manila Prosecutor's Office.
