At least four communist rebels died in a fierce clash with soldiers in Las Navas, Northern Samar on Thursday, July 31.

Maj. Jefferson Mariano, chief of the Public Affairs Office of the 8th Infantry Division, said the clash erupted when their men pinpointed the location of the alleged hideout of communist rebels in the hinterlands of Barangay San Isidro at around 2:30 a.m.

“The hideouts were heavily fortified and surrounded by International Humanitarian Law banned anti-personnel mines (APMs). This prompted the troops to call for fire support,” said Mariano.

He said the reinforcing forces from the 803rd Infantry Brigade encountered another group of rebels at around 10 in the morning in the western part of the first encounter site.

This resulted in the death of four communist rebels.

Seized in the two operations were four M16 rifles and an M203 grenade launcher.

Mariano said soldiers immediately conducted pursuit operations against the remaining rebels.
