Covering an area of over 2,000 square meters, the blaze quickly spread, fueled by the highly flammable materials within the warehouse.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident shook both residents and local officials due to its scale and the economic impact on the community.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, which gutted one of the most prominent establishments in the area, leaving its owner, Osbert Ong, with substantial losses.
Disaster in Lapu-Lapu City
Less than 24 hours later, on Jan. 24, another fire broke out in Sitio Sangi, Barangay Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City. The fire started at 1:28 p.m., swiftly spreading to neighboring houses.
Authorities suspect the blaze was caused by children playing "luto-luto" (pretend cooking) on the second floor of a residence owned by Wilmer Ching.
The fire destroyed 41 homes, rendering 59 families or 275 individuals, homeless. Damage from the incident was estimated at P648,000.
The affected families have since been relocated to the Pusok Gym, which has been equipped with foldable tents and basic amenities to temporarily house the evacuees.
Relief efforts, spearheaded by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), are ongoing to provide food, water, and clothing for the displaced residents.
Fire in Mandaue again
Later on the same day, a much larger fire erupted in Sitio Pokang, Barangay Looc, and Purok Orchids, Barangay Opao, Mandaue City.
