March is International Women’s Month. It’s a pivotal occasion encouraging women from all walks of life to celebrate their identity and feel empowered for who they are. Though the ignorant few may question why there is a need to observe such a moment, we must remember we are still a long way from achieving gender equality. Fortunately, we now live in an age that recognizes the need to shift away from this line of thinking. Such is evident at SM Supermall’s recent Women Inspiring Women forum that took place a day before International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8.

During the event, 14 speakers shared their insights on how to inspire fellow women and ensure we work toward true gender equality. The women panelists came from various backgrounds, with some being key figures in male-dominated fields like technology. Here are four essential lessons we can all learn from the many empowering stories that were shared during the forum.

Always believe in yourself

Don’t let your insecurities get the best of you. Stand firm and set your eyes on your goals. Never back down even when the going gets tough. Though there are hurdles caused by patriarchal norms, these are barriers meant to be broken. If you, as a woman, believe you cannot achieve certain things because society told you so, then you must break this line of thinking. We live in a time where opportunities are now open for anyone, thanks to the dedication of past generations of women who fought hard to bring us to where we are now.

Your voice matters

In line with believing in yourself, learn to speak up for yourself. Your voice matters and it must be heard. Be steadfast in defending your beliefs. Stand strong and remember that your thoughts and ideas are valid. Never let anyone stop you from voicing your concerns solely because you are a woman.

Empowerment comes in many forms

Every woman is unique. Being a woman can be defined in many different ways and you shouldn’t feel pressured to follow certain paths based on your gender alone. You don’t have to strictly become the girl-boss CEO type or the standout feminist icon to feel empowered. Your path must be one you are comfortable with. Find what you feel defines you best.

Support others to the fullest

Perhaps the most important lesson one can take from all this is that we must learn to support others to achieve true empowerment. True gender equality can only be attained if we respect one another as human beings. Better representation is a good start, but we must urge others around us to continue being true allies by pushing for reforms and legislations that benefit women’s rights. We must continue to call out sexism and push for equal opportunities whenever possible. By supporting women, we help in bettering the world around us and ensuring we can all find the best possible paths.
