Lopez-led First Gen Corp. has partnered with a Japanese multinational industrial gas firm to integrate renewable energy (RE) in its facilities.

In a statement, Nippon Sanso Ingasco Group (NSIG), which is a unit of Nippon Sanso Holdings Group, will receive 100-percent clean energy for its manufacturing facility in Mindanao, specifically within Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

According to First Gen, it will supply 2.6 megawatts (MW) worth of electricity via its Mindanao geothermal power plant located in North Cotabato, owned and managed by its subsidiary Energy Development Corp. (EDC).

The power supply agreement (PSA) was done via the retail competition open access (RCOA) provision, as part of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA).

RCOA allows consumers with an average peak demand of a minimum of 500 kilowatts (kW) to purchase electricity from their selected suppliers.

Carlo Vega, First Gen’s chief engagement officer, acknowledged that there are a few hurdles to switching to full RE.

“Transitioning to direct RE supply under RCOA comes with challenges, but the benefits far outweigh them. We are committed to helping our customers like NSIG achieve their decarbonization objectives through ensuring stable and efficient power supply from RE sources and optimizing electricity utilization using energy efficiency solutions,” he said.

Takenori Kawachino, NSIG president, added that this secured deal would help the company contribute to minimizing carbon emissions.

“As part of the Nippon Sanso Holdings Group’s global commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, we are continuously working to minimize our environmental impact,” he said.

“Partnering with First Gen to power our operations in Tagoloan with 100-percent RE marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. This initiative aligns with our commitment to adopt cleaner energy sources for our production facilities and promote sustainable solutions across our global operations,” Kawachino added.

Similar recent partnerships include First Gen’s collaboration with industrial printing firm Precision Crestec Inc. to provide 700 kW of clean power to its facility in Pasig City.
