MANILA, Philippines — Filipino Apostolic Nuncio to Israel Adolfo Tito Yllana has retired from the Holy See's diplomatic service, according to CBCP News.

Yllana, who also served as apostolic delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine, retired at age 77, two years beyond the mandatory retirement age for bishops.

The Vatican Press Office said on January 22 that Archbishop Giorgio Lingua, titular archbishop of Tuscania, will succeed Yllana. Lingua has served as apostolic nuncio to Croatia since 2019.

Diplomatic career. Yllana joined the Vatican's diplomatic service in 1984 and represented the Holy See in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.

Prior to being named by Pope Francis as the apostolic nuncio to Israel in June 2021, he had been serving in Australia in the same capacity since 2015.

Early assignments. A native of Naga City, Yllana was ordained a priest in 1972 for the Archdiocese of Caceres.

In December 2001, Pope St. John Paul II appointed him apostolic nuncio to Papua New Guinea, later expanding his responsibilities to include the nunciature on Solomon Islands.

He was ordained bishop on Jan. 6, 2002, at St. Peter's Basilica.

Later postings. Pope Benedict XVI later appointed Yllana apostolic nuncio to Pakistan in 2006 and to the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2010. — with reports from CBCP News.
