MANILA, Philippines — Federal agents have arrested eight people, including some of Filipino descent, in Southern California in connection with a $50 million hospice fraud scheme.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California said the eight defendants, including three nurses, a chiropractor, and a purported psychologist, have been arrested on federal charges that they schemed to defraud the US health care system out of more than $50 million – including by running sham hospice care facilities that bilked Medicare by using people without terminal illnesses as beneficiaries.
The hospice?fraud scheme billed Medicare for millions of dollars in services that were never medically necessary.
According to the indictment, the defendants allegedly enrolled individuals who were not terminally ill into hospice programs and submitted fraudulent claims to Medicare.
Investigators said that the group used recruiters to target elderly and low?income individuals, many of whom did not understand they were being placed into hospice care.
The US Attorney’s Office emphasized that hospice fraud remains a significant threat to federal health care programs, noting in past enforcement actions that such schemes divert resources intended for vulnerable patients and undermine Medicare’s integrity.
