MANILA, Philippines — The country's flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) have finally dropped the "Safetynovela" video which will screen in flights prior to planes taking off.
Safety videos are a form of the routine pre-flight briefings where airline crew inform passengers of the aircraft's safety features and emergency procedures.
PAL put a creative spin on their new six-minute safety video by incorporating the popular aspects of a Filipino teleserye into its detailing, ensuring to grab passengers' attention.
The video begins with an introduction by two PAL employees and glimpses of local destinations Palawan, Bohol, and Hacienda Rosalia in Negros Occidental where the "Care that comes from the heart" story introduces its characters.
Kelley Day's Luisa is shown stowing her items in an overhead compartment and underneath a seat before she comes face-to-face with old flame Anton (Khalid Abdullah).
That is until Luisa's father played by Robert Seña introduces Jay Gonzaga's Diego asks for her hand in marriage, much to Anton's dejection.
Luisa's relecutance is treated as an advisory to clear out aisles and exit rows while Diego and Seña's character's attempt to smoke is deemed illegal.
Luisa's mother played by Maritess Joaquin takes away her daughter's phone, put into airplane mode, and the fourth wall is broken when the female PAL employee is asked to retrieve the phone from between the seats.
On the wedding day, a humorous back-and-forth between the PAL employee and where to place a powerbank takes place before an instruction how to wear plane seatbelts.
"Para sa kabubuti mo 'to, Luisa," her mother goes when Luisa attempts to take off her seatbelt. Later a rocky road doubles as turbulence to remind people to keep their seatbelts on at all times.
Amid the impossible distance, the wedding is taking place in Albay's Daraga Church where Diego barges in for an iconic "Itigil ang kasal!" moment.
The encounter is treated as "a rapid change in cabin pressure," so the wedding guests demonstrate how to put on oxygen masks.
Anton leads Luisa away down a lit-up aisle as emegency exits are presented above them. Luisa even leaves sharp objects and her bouquet behind, as expected in an emergency landing, before passing more guests demonstrating brace positions.
Diego faces off against Anton outside donning the life vests used in case of water landings but Luisa stops the fight from even starting, professes her and Anton's love, and a tear from Diego's face triggers his life vest's light.
The story ends on Malcapuya Island in Coron, Palawan as Luisa and Anton "prepare for takeoff," showing up the safety card, and a reminder to be careful handling hot drinks.
"Because nothing says true love like care that froms the heart," the narration ends followed by clips of Pangasinan and Boracay.
PAL's "Safetynovela" debuted on its newly acquired Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, the first in Southeast Asia, and will follow on other flights this January. — Video from Philippine Airlines' YouTube channel
