CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The family of the police officer who reportedly committed suicide by hanging demanded on Thursday a full investigation by the police after the policeman's wife allegedly refused the conduct of an autopsy.
Retired Police Master Executive Sergeant Albert Apellanes, 57, formerly assigned with the Cagayan de Oro Police, was found hanging in their house in Cagayan de Oro City on Jan. 17, 2025.
Responding policemen brought the victim to the nearest hospital where attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The family of Apellanes suspected foul play and demanded an autopsy and full investigation of the victim's death.
Police investigators, however, said that the family of the victim should ask the court to compel an autopsy of the body in order to overcome the wife's decision not to subject her husband's remains to autopsy.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy, meanwhile, supported the move to conduct a postmortem examination on the remains of Apellanes. He told The Manila Times that the result of the autopsy will determine the cause of death.
