MANILA, Philippines — Former Commission on Elections spokesman James Jimenez has died, the Comelec announced yesterday.

The poll body hailed Jimenez, “who served the institution and the Filipino people with integrity, clarity and utmost dedication.”

He was described as the “longest-serving and youngest spokesperson in government at the time of his appointment.”

“From July 2006 to September 2022, he was the public face and voice of the Commission – explaining complex electoral processes with precision, defending democratic institutions with courage and engaging citizens and media with respect, wit and transparency,” the Comelec said.

Jimenez pioneered the official social media channels of the poll body, giving the public a direct avenue for conveying their queries and concerns, the Comelec said.

The Comelec praised Jimenez for “his intellectual rigor, his sense of humor and humanity,” and for being a “trusted colleague and a reassuring presence during some of the most challenging periods in election administration.”

“We honor his legacy of public service and his contributions to election transparency and voter education. His voice, professionalism and quiet courage will be remembered,” the Comelec said.

The poll body announced Jimenez’s retirement as director of the Education and Information Department in September 2022.

In April of the same year, he was relieved after his name was dragged into the P14-million payment for a private contractor tapped for a presidential debate during the 2022 elections.
