MANILA, Philippines — American actor Eric Dane, popularly known for playing Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy", has passed away after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. He was 53 years old.
Dane's death was confirmed by his family in a statement released to several entertainment outlets.
"With heavy hearts, we share that Eric passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," read the statement. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."
The statement noted how Dane was an advocate for ALS awareness and research since he was diagnosed last year as he was "determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight."
"He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he's received," the statement ended as Dane's family requested for privacy.

Dane started out in Hollywood with bit roles in television shows before landing recurring characters in "Gideon's Crossing" and "Charmed".
His stint as McSteamy, a named coined by nurses in "Grey's Anatomy", ran from a Season 2 guest appearance until the character was killed off early in Season 9. Sloan returned in a Season 17 episode for a special appearance.
The role led to projects like "X-Men: The Last Stand", "Marley & Me", "Wedding Wars", "Valentine's Day", "Burlesque", "The Last Ship" and "Bad Boys: Ride or Die".
Newer audiences later saw him in "Euphoria" as Cal Jacobs, the father of Jacob Elordi's Nate, who is expected to appear in the show's upcoming third season.
