'Eraserheads: Combo On The Run' makes its historic debut at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con this July

MANILA, Philippines — The journey of Filipino rock band Eraserheads takes center stage at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con 2025, as Eraserheads: Combo On The Run becomes the first Filipino-produced music documentary to screen at the global pop culture event.

San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), a non-profit pop culture convention held annually at the San Diego Convention Center in California, will run from July 24 to 27, featuring four days of panels, exhibits, and fan events.

After its SDCC screening, Eraserheads: Combo On The Run will also be featured in a panel discussion at Exhibit Hall 6BCF, which is typically used for major titles in entertainment and pop culture. The panel will be led by director and producer Diane Ventura and Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia.

The documentary serves as a tribute for the legendary band known for their timeless hits like “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” “With a Smile,” “Ligaya,” “Magasin,” “Pare Ko,” “Alapaap,” and more, while offering a raw, multi-perspective reckoning of their rise, breakup, and reunion.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have this opportunity to represent our people and country on a more global platform,” said Ventura in a media statement.

“It’s long been my dream to spotlight the ingenuity of Filipino art, talent, and creativity and to be part of a movement that reframes the Filipino narrative. This is also my way of putting out a more nuanced and extensive depiction of our people while bringing to light the richness, humor, and depth of our stories.”

To mark its historic debut at San Diego Comic-Con, Kid Heroes also teamed up with the Eraserheads and DVent Pictures for a special one-shot comic inspired by the film.

Told in an anthology format, the comic reimagines the Eraserheads’ semi-fictional journey through four stories that merge music, mythology, and heroism. The band becomes zombie-fighting superheroes who spread good through their heroic deeds and hits.

The issue is written by Patricio Ginelsa and Justin Quizon, with art by Raymund Lee, Felix Morales, and Ardie Aquino. Two exclusive covers will also be released: one by Whilce Portacio (The Punisher, X-Men) for SDCC 2025, and another by Stephen Segovia (DC Comics) for the SuperManila edition.

Founded in 1970, SDCC has evolved into a cornerstone gathering for comics, film, television, gaming, animation, and multimedia arts, making it one of the world’s largest and most influential conventions for fans and creators alike. – Blaise Rellata/Rappler.com
