MANILA, Philippines — EJ Obiena will attend the invitational pole vault meet at the Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite, this afternoon but isn’t sure if he’ll jump or not. In basketball terms, it’ll be a game-time decision.

“No pressure,” said Obiena who flew in Sunday evening after competing in two Diamond League legs in China. “Coach Vitaly (Petrov) told me it depends on how I feel. To be honest, I’d like to capitalize on the opportunity to manage my heights, get reps and enjoy the competitive atmosphere.” Yesterday, Obiena did light workouts “to loosen up” at Vermosa.

In Xiamen last April 26, Obiena cleared 5.62 for seventh to mark his Diamond League series debut this season. In Shaoxing last Saturday, he improved to 5.72 for fifth. “I’m slowly getting my bearings,” said Obiena. “Last year, I had to adapt with a bad back and now that it’s healed, I’m adapting to a new situation and working on my speed. In Shaoxing, I tried to clear 5.82 thrice but blew through my poles and I think with bigger sticks, I could’ve done it. I’m a bit skeptical of my progress although it’s a good problem. It’s early in the season but I’m getting there.”

Because the Vermosa meet is invitational, Obiena will be allowed to join as a late entry if he decides to compete, said PATAFA secretary-general Jasper Tanhueco. Female action starts at 4 p.m. with the men’s event to follow. Meanwhile, Obiena and Petrov are waiting for their Korean visas to be issued. Once their passports are released, they’ll fly to Gumi for the Asian Championships on May 27-31.
