MANILA, Philippines — Two activists were arrested and seven police officers were injured after violence marred rallies during the 40th anniversary of the EDSA people power revolt yesterday.
The demonstrators – a man and a woman – were apprehended by anti-riot police following a standoff near the EDSA Shrine in Quezon City.
“They were agitators na nambabato, so we cannot do otherwise but to effect the arrest,” Brig. Gen. Ponce Rogelio Penones, chief of the Philippine National Police Directorate for Operations, said.
Police said charges of direct assault, resistance and disobedience to persons in authority, alarm and scandal as well as violation of Batas Pambansa 880 or the Public Assembly Act are being readied against the demonstrators.
The activists are members of Sanlakas, according to Bagong Alyansang Makabayan secretary general Raymond Palatino.
Penones said the rallyists pelted police with stones as they attempted to occupy the southbound lane of EDSA without a rally permit.
Seven police officers suffered injuries, Metro Manila police director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin told reporters.
One of them was brought to the PNP General Hospital for an X-ray on his skull.
Penones said the confrontation between police and the protesters at the vicinity of the EDSA Shrine was an isolated incident.
About 6,000 people trooped to the EDSA Shrine and People Power Monument, Penones said.
The PNP deployed 14,900 police officers as part of security measures.
Palatino, however, gave a higher crowd estimate of 12,000. — EJ Macababbad
