MANILA, Philippines — Senators commemorated the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, with Sen. Bam Aquino calling it not the end, but the beginning.
Aquino, who hails from the family that is associated with the EDSA revolution, called it proof that a peaceful revolution was possible. When soldiers held up guns, citizens held up their rosaries, he said.
The senator encouraged people to study the lessons that the revolution taught four decades later.
“Ang EDSA ay hindi wakas kundi simula pa lamang ng mas mahabang paglalakbay bilang isang bayan. Kaya’t isa itong panawagan at hamon na magkaisa, makilahok, at manindigan para sa tama,” Aquino said in a Facebook post.
(EDSA is not the end but the start of a long journey as a nation. So this is a call and challenge to unify, participate, and stand for what is right.)
In a separate media interview, Aquino called EDSA an “unfinished revolution,” saying that the fight for democracy still continued, especially amid massive corruption schemes in the government.
Meanwhile, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said that EDSA was an example of how the impossible can become possible through the collective action of different sectors working for the common good.
“The impossible became possible in EDSA 40 years ago, when the 20-year one-man rule ended and returned the institutions of democracy like the Senate and free press,” Pangilinan said.
EDSA reminds us that things that seemed impossible before, like higher income for farmers and fishers and ending corruption, will become possible.
“The impossible will once again become possible through the collective action of various sectors, for the sake of the least and the most vulnerable,” Pangilinan said.
