Drew Arellano was lauded by the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) for getting a vasectomy.
In a statement, CPD praised the Kapuso host for “his manifestation of love and appreciation for his spouse and family,” as the act “strongly exemplifies responsible parenthood and family planning as promoted by the CPD.”
“We need more men like Mr. Arellano to encourage men to assume greater responsibility in ensuring the well-being of their partner and their children through responsible parenthood and family planning,” said CPD Executive Director, Usec. Lisa Grace Bersales.
The commission said that Drew’s vasectomy comes as "good news" amid the low number of men who participate in family planning.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority's (PSA) National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) in 2022, men who underwent non-scalpel vasectomy (NSVs) stayed at 0.1% in the past five years while those who used condoms was at 2% for 2022.
The CPD added that family planning is mostly done by women. It cited that a total of 8.6 million Filipino women using modern methods of family planning, an increase from the 8.3 million women who used family planning methods in 2022.
It also underscored the importance of shared responsibility in family planning, saying, "The agency is calling for more male participation through actual access to family planning services."
The CPD likewise promoted its Kalalakihang Tapat sa Responsibilidad at Obligasyon sa Pamilya (KATROPA) program. The flagship program encourages men to give a higher level of care for their wives or partners, be more concerned with the holistic growth of their children, and be involved in the welfare of their families.
A minor surgical procedure, vasectomy is a form of male birth control that stops sperm from leaving the body.
Drew announced he underwent a vasectomy on Monday. Following this, Iya revealed in a separate post on Instagram that Drew's vasectomy is actually "late [because] this was supposed to happen last year."
"And then Anya happened so this time, he made sure," the Chika Minute host added.
Drew and Iya have been married since 2014. Their five kids are Primo, Leon, Alana, Astro, and newborn Anya Love.
