MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is spending P75 million to put up additional facilities in the relocation site for informal settler families (ISFs) displaced by the expansion of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1).

DOTr yesterday turned over P75 million to the local government of General Trias in Cavite to build more facilities in Kalinga Village, a resettlement site in Barangay Santiago.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the amount would finance the construction of support facilities aimed at making Kalinga Village a livable community.

Lopez said the objective is to set up a neighborhood complete with basic amenities. As such, the local government of General Trias is tasked to equip the relocation site with a public park, school building, water utility, among others.

“The strict directive of President Marcos is to never neglect the needs of Filipinos who would be displaced by government projects. They must be given a proper and decent relocation site where their lives could carry on,” Lopez said.

Transportation Assistant Secretary Irish Calaguas said the amount also includes providing ISFs with livelihood programs to ensure they can sustain their basic needs.

To date, Kalinga Village is 81 percent occupied, with 1,374 units of the 1,698 now housing ISFs originally from Parañaque, Las Piñas and Bacoor, Cavite.

Based on the DOTr’s timeline, the additional facilities in Kalinga Village will be completed this year, providing the community with basic amenities like power and water supply.

The LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project will add 11 kilometers to the existing line of the railway. It is divided into three segments, with the first and longest one, between Redemptorist-Aseana and Dr. Santos, already running in 2024.

The project’s second phase runs for 3.2 kilometers, covering the Las Piñas and Zapote stations. The final leg of the extension spans 2.4 kilometers, leading to the Niog station in Bacoor.

Once completed entirely, the LRT-1’s Cavite line is expected to cut the travel time between Pasay and Bacoor to just 25 minutes, from 1.5 hours right now.

Likewise, the LRT-1’s daily ridership is projected to rise to 800,000 daily through the extension, alleviating traffic congestion in major thoroughfares in the southern metro.
