MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will roll out at least 200,000  jobs nationwide under its Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program starting today.

In a radio interview, newly appointed Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino said TUPAD beneficiaries would be deployed to schools nationwide to assist in the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Brigada Eskwela program in preparation for the opening of classes.

Workers will be tasked to clean school grounds, repair classrooms and help ensure that learning facilities are ready for students.

Tolentino said that the temporary employment program will run from June until the start of classes and may continue even while classes are ongoing.

He added that DOLE regional directors were instructed to supervise the simultaneous nationwide implementation of the program in coordination with DepEd officials.

The TUPAD program, launched in 2009 under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program, provides temporary wage employment to marginalized, underemployed and displaced workers for periods ranging from 10 to 30 days.

Beneficiaries are usually assigned community-based work such as street cleaning, canal declogging, tree planting and repair of public facilities, and are paid based on the prevailing regional minimum wage.

Meanwhile, the labor chief mentioned that DOLE is coordinating with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to explore additional livelihood assistance for graduates of technical-vocational courses.

He said the agency is considering providing starter kits and initial capital assistance to TESDA graduates to help them establish small businesses after completing their training.
