MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has deployed a team to Myanmar to give support to Filipinos seriously affected by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

In coordination with the Philippine embassy in Yangon, the DMW tasked the visiting team to extend assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Myanmar.

The team, led by assistant labor attaché Don Albert Philippe Pangcog, is composed of administrative and technical staff from the central office and Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Bangkok.

Pangcog went to Yangon and Mandalay to provide financial assistance worth P75,000 and other welfare services to OFWs whose employment and income have been affected by the earthquake.

“To facilitate their return, affected OFWs in Yangon and Mandalay were provided contract verification and OEC (overseas employment certificate) issuance services,” the DMW said.

On Labor Day, DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac and the department’s senior officials sent the Mandalay-based OFWs a message assuring them of the government’s commitment to provide all the necessary assistance and support they may need.

Prior to the Myanmar visit, several Mandalay-based OFWs transiting in Thailand received financial assistance from the MWO in Bangkok.

The DMW, through MWO-Bangkok, is currently arranging with other Mandalay-based OFWs who are outside Myanmar for the distribution of their financial assistance.
It was more than a month ago when a massive earthquake hit Myanmar, leaving thousands dead and injured.
