MANILA, Philippines — Classes and work at De La Salle schools will be suspended on Feb. 25 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1986 people power revolt.
Students are encouraged to be at the “forefront of democratic engagement,” De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) said.
Activities honoring the “spirit of people power” will be organized, DLSP said.
The anniversary is taking place at a time when massive corruption, impunity and injustice are diminishing in significance, DLSP said.
Signatories to the statement are Jose Mari Jimenez, De La Salle Brothers Inc. president; Edgar Chua, DLSP president and Edmundo Fernandez, DLSP superintendent.
Religious groups earlier urged Catholic schools to suspend classes on Feb. 25 and hold activities that would deepen students’ understanding of the country’s democratic struggle.
