MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is verifying reports that a Filipino fighting alongside Russian forces was killed in Ukraine.
“Still checking. We will inform you if there is a comment from the DFA,” Foreign Affairs spokesperson Angelica Escalona said yesterday.
Kyiv Post reported that Ukraine’s military intelligence announced that a Filipino fighting with Russian forces was killed in the Donetsk region on Monday.
In a statement, Ukraine’s military intelligence said its operatives identified John Patrick, a citizen of the Philippines, among Russian troops killed near the village of Novoselivka in the Kramatorsk district.
It was reported that the Filipino mercenary carried a weapon, ammunition and a scrap of paper with a unit number, a phone number and his commander’s name.
Data recovered from his electronic devices showed his basic training lasted only about a week before he was sent to battle.
After being wounded, he was left without evacuation and reportedly died in a forested area.
