MANILA, Philippines — Classes in public schools are not covered by the four-day workweek arrangement announced by President Marcos, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said yesterday.
“I don’t believe so, but the DepEd offices are covered,” Angara told The STAR.
Marcos said starting March 9, some agencies under the executive branch would implement a four-day workweek as the country braces for higher oil prices triggered by the Middle East conflict.
This was among the measures laid down by Marcos to address the impending surge in prices of petroleum products next week.
Under Memorandum Circular 114 signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, agencies shall adopt a four-day onsite work arrangement through a compressed workweek or a
designated common day for work-from-home arrangements, in accordance with the Civil Service Commission to reduce building energy load and transport fuel use.
Angara has ordered all public schools to observe ‘simple yet meaningful’ graduation and moving-up ceremonies, as he reiterated the ‘no collection’ policy of the department.
“While these rites mark a milestone in learners’ lives, they shall be conducted without excessive spending, extravagant attire or extraordinary venues,” Angara said in his DepEd Memorandum 15, series of 2026, dated March 4.
Angara announced the conduct of the end-of-school-year rites for Kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 10 and Grade 12 learners in public schools, as well as Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners who satisfactorily meet the curriculum requirements at the end of the school year (SY) 2025-2026.
“Implementing guidelines on the school calendar and activities, the SY 2025-2026 shall end on March 31, 2026. Thus, the rites shall be conducted on either March 30 or 31, 2026. The theme of the SY 2025-2026 rites shall be ‘Filipino Graduates: Prepared to Lead with Competence and Character,’” he said.
