MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will mobilize personnel nationwide to maintain public safety and support commuters during the three-day transport strike starting Tuesday, December 9.

Acting PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police commanders have been directed to work closely with local governments and other agencies to mitigate the expected disruption from the strike organized by the transport group Manibela.

“Our personnel will be on the ground not only to secure the protest action but also conduct assessment on areas that need mobility assets for our kababayan that may be stranded,” Nartatez said in a statement Monday, December 8.

Police units will be stationed at key routes, terminals and major roads to ensure peace and order, Nartatez said.

Mobility vehicles will also be on standby to ferry commuters who may struggle to find rides during the strike.

Manibela grievances

Manibela, a group of public transport drivers and operators, earlier announced a nationwide strike from December 9 to 11, protesting what it described as excessive penalties and slow government processing of transport-related documents.

The group has also opposed the continued requirement for drivers and operators of unconsolidated public utility vehicles to secure provisional authorities — a process they argue imposes unnecessary financial and administrative burdens.

Manibela chair Mar Valbuena said the group may extend the strike if the government does not address their concerns.
