Head south next weekend as the Seven Lakes Komiks Festival celebrates Darna, the Philippines' most popular comic heroine!
MANILA, Philippines – The Seven Lakes Komiks Festival returns for its second year as it looks to celebrate Filipino comics through popular heroine Darna on Saturday, May 17, at the Art Barn of Casa San Pablo in Laguna.
With the theme “From Panels to Legacy: Lipad, Darna! 75,” the event aims to celebrate Darna and her storied history as one of the Philippines’ most popular komiks heroines.
“We believe in the power of komiks — and it’s time we see it thrive beyond the usual convention circuit. Our goal is to create space for komiks to evolve, while honoring its rich roots and exploring bold new directions,” the festival said in a statement.
The event hopes to highlight the Darna timeline — from her inception, the many movie adaptations, her komiks art, and costumes throughout the years, among others.
The festival will feature a comics-centric market to advertise new books and introduce new and old creators in a relaxed setting.
Festivalgoers can also visit the Komikero Komiks Museum, a local place preserving the legacy of Filipino komiks masters from the golden to the modern era. The museum prides itself on its rich collection of Filipino comics, which visitors can bask in.
There will also be a screening of Jay Ignacio’s documentary Komiks with a K, which looks into the past and the current state of Filipino sequential art.
Another highlight will be a roundtable forum focusing on comics and adaptations titled ”Kumusta Komiks?” with Mike Alcazaren of Patay Kung Patay, Julius Villanueva of Ella Arcangel, and Gino dela Cruz from the Ravelo Family.
Additionally, there will be talks on intellectual property rights for artists and creators, a character design workshop, and a comics-making contest.
Food and local delicacies will be offered at the event.
The Seven Lakes Komiks Festival is co-presented with Casa San Pablo, The Komikero Komiks Museum, and the Graphic Literature Guild. – Rappler.com
