Dairy’s role in Filipino nutrition: Addressing gaps and opportunities

6 days ago 4

Nutrition is a cornerstone of family well-being, yet many Filipino households face challenges in providing balanced meals. A recent study commissioned by the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) highlights a gap between dietary needs and actual consumption habits, revealing evolving nutritional challenges among Filipino families.

These findings were shared at USDEC's "U.S. Dairy Ingredients Seminar: Market Trends and Formulation Insights for Nourishing Innovation," where industry experts discussed the role of dairy in addressing these concerns.

The importance of balanced meals

According to Anoo Pothen, director of consumer insights for USDEC Southeast Asia, “Our research revealed that 62% of Filipino parents surveyed view serving balanced meals among the most important measures to ensure their child is healthy and that the top three health aspects desired for their child are having a strong immune system, age-appropriate weight and a sharp memory.”

Despite these priorities, the study found that 40% of middle- to upper-income households struggle to provide a balanced meal for their children. While many parents recognize the importance of healthy meals, they often find it difficult to provide nutritious snacks.

The role of dairy in Filipino diets

One of the ways parents can ensure that their children receive a nutrient-dense diet is by incorporating dairy products, such as milk or yogurt, into their family’s meals. Dairy contains essential nutrients that are difficult to obtain from other food sources, including protein, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A, B12, and D. It also provides nine essential amino acids that support muscle development and recovery.

Dr. Cecilia Acuin, MD, PhD, from the University of the Philippines, emphasized that dairy plays a vital role in the diet of the Filipino family. “With regular consumption, dairy can improve overall health and nutrition of family members of all ages,” she said.

Beyond its nutritional benefits, dairy products offer versatility and convenience. Yogurt, for example, is available in various flavors and textures, making it enjoyable for both children and adults. It can be eaten on its own or paired with healthy snacks like granola or fresh fruit. Dairy products also serve as key ingredients in soups, pastries, and salad dressings, making them a practical addition to daily meals.

U.S. Dairy’s commitment to the Philippines

The Philippines is the largest export market for U.S. dairy in Southeast Asia, with nearly half of its dairy imports coming from the United States. With 84% of Filipino parents acknowledging dairy’s role in boosting the nutrition of packaged foods and beverages, demand for these products is on the rise.

Families can trust dairy products from the U.S. as they meet strict regulatory standards. “The entire U.S. dairy industry, from farm families to dairy institutions, work to ensure that all products meet the strict U.S. regulatory standards and hope to exceed their consumers’ expectations,” the study notes.

The U.S. dairy industry has made substantial investments in Southeast Asia to strengthen these partnerships. The U.S. Center for Dairy Excellence (U.S. CDE), established in Singapore in 2020, serves as a hub for innovation, collaboration, and education. Through this and other initiatives, the U.S. dairy industry aims to foster partnerships that will support the growing demand for dairy products among Filipino families.
