MANILA, Philippines — The crime volume in the country decreased by nearly four percent in January, according to data released by the Philippine National Police yesterday.

The PNP said it documented 2,581 focus crimes, lower by 3.97 percent compared to the 2,681 incidents in December.

In Quezon City, the crime volume in January went down by 14.19 percent, or 133 crimes from the 155 incidents recorded in December.

Data from the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) showed cases of physical injuries recording the biggest drop at 50 percent, or from 18 to nine cases, followed by motorcycle theft from 21 to 13 – a decline of 38.10 percent.

QCPD director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio attributed the improving peace and order situation to the operations conducted in crime-prone communities.

“We will continue to strengthen the programs to improve peace and order in Quezon City,” Silvio said in a statement.

According to the PNP, rape cases in the country showed a notable decrease with 400 reports, down by 22.48 percent from the previous month’s 516 incidents.

Murder went down by 10.97 percent from 319 to 284, physical injury from 427 to 299 or a drop of 29.97 percent, and motorcycle theft from 162 to 149, a decline of 8.02 percent, the PNP added.

In terms of solving cases, the crime resolution efficiency was at 70.24 percent.

“These numbers show that criminality is now lower and more cases are solved. This means that our strategy – strengthened operations and coordination with communities – is working,” said PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez.

He added that the solved cases give closure to victims and their families and enhance safety in the community.
