MANILA, Philippines — The Communist Party of the Philippines has ordered its units to temporarily halt their activities on select days of December and January to give way to the celebration of holidays.

In a statement, the party's central committee announced a four-day ceasefire on the following dates:

  • From 12 a.m. of December 25 to 11:59 p.m. of December 26
  • From 12 a.m. of December 31 to 11:59 p.m. of January 1

"On the above specified days, all units of the NPA are directed to go into active defense mode, especially in the face of relentless military operations of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) against peasants communities and guerrilla fronts across the country," the CPP said.

No statement was immediately available from the AFP.

The party added that the ceasefire order is being issued "in solidarity with the Filipino people as they conduct simple celebrations of their traditional holidays, amid grave social and economic conditions."

The party is also celebrating its 57th founding anniversary on December 25.
