For violating environmental laws
COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A municipal mayor and seven barangay officials in Cotabato have been dismissed from their posts for allegedly violating environmental laws.
The office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Thursday served an order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman removing Mayor Jesus Sacdalan of Alamada town from his post.
The order was delivered by DILG-Soccsksargen lawyer Rochelle Sero and was received by Sacdalan himself.
Sacdalan signed the order in the presence of DILG officials and local executives including his son, Vice Mayor Victor Sacdalan, who replaced him as mayor.
The ombudsman said that Sacdalan and the seven village chiefs were found guilty of violating environmental laws when they allowed the construction of roads and a power plant in a protected area.
The dismissal stemmed from a complaint filed by officials of the provincial government of Cotabato, who alleged that the projects had no permits from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.
The complainants said that Sacdalan and the barangay officials failed to protect the watershed of the Libungan River when they allowed the construction of the projects in the area.
